Sol-Brenna had never met Master Chalice before. He landed on one foot several feet away, then jogged a few more feet by way of catching his balance.

His cheeks were reddened from flight and his skin fair. His long blond curly hair escaped a leather clasp in a way Sol-Brenna found very appealing. His hazel eyes glinted even in the dark. Her night vision excelled most witches, but then given that she possessed a bit of vampire heritage, she supposed this was normal.

Only what would Eligio think of her when he found out the truth?

Eligio clasped Chalice’s hand and forearm and Chalice did the same. The vampires exchanged looks of understanding, chins nodding. Of course, Sol-Brenna had heard of the tragedy at Chalice’s communal home in Cormentshire. So much death, and all because of the Mage vampires.

As a rogue vampire group living on the fringes of society, the Mage fed on all other species. They lived in chaotic, debauched groups called Mages, usually with the most powerful vampire taking on the role of leader.

The Mage hunted for easy prey and forged the tendril bonds, which gave a rush of power. Afterwards, the Mage usually drained and killed their bound mates so that they could begin the process all over again.

Breaking into Chalice’s communal home, and killing almost two dozen vampires, had stunned the shires. Each master now sent out patrols on a regular basis throughout the land, hunting for the marauders. The Mage moved around a lot from one hunting zone to the next, always in small bands, making them hard to track down and kill.

Eligio turned to Sol-Brenna. “Chalice, I’d like you to meet a friend of mine, the witch, Sol-Brenna.”

“How do you do?” Chalice extended his hand to her. She took it and immediately her tendrils came alive in her skin, this time at the tips of her fingers.

Startled, she jumped backward. Before she could make sense of why touching Chalice had aroused the binding response, Eligio thrust his arm in front of her, separating her from Chalice as though to protect her.

She could feel his sudden rage, like heat pulsing in waves from his body. She glanced up at him but he didn’t look at her. Instead, he breathed hard, in heavy gulps and his shoulders had grown tight, way too tight. He grunted in the strangest way as he glared at Chalice.

She understood, or at least thought she did.

She grabbed his arm and tugged hard. “Hey,” she called sharply. He shifted to stare down at her, but his ice blue eyes had turned black and danced once more with flames. His fangs touched his lips and his nostrils flexed like bellows.

She moved to stand in front of him and put both her hands on his face. She leaned up and kissed him. She spoke softly. “Come back to me, Eligio. Let this obsession go. I’m here, with you. I belong to you. I’m here.” She kissed him again and again.

His hands found her arms and he held her tight, squeezing hard.
